Friday's Four Words: In Time

Backstreet's back, all right? Oh hell, he was in N'Sync...

Here is the four word (and then some) review of the movie, In Time.

Review in Four Words: Fascinating concept, poor execution.

And Then Some: Every once and a while I'll come across a new movie that has an interesting concept, and one that isn't a sequel/re-make/rehash/reboot/seriously-you're-going-with-that-idea type of thing. I Netflixed In Time, a movie starring the not-too-terrible-at-acting Justin Timberlake, and the always slightly creepy-sexy Cillian Murphy.

In the not-so distant future, mankind is genetically engineered to stop aging at twenty-five years old—the catch is that once you hit twenty-five, your life is on a countdown clock. Literally. Every person has a span of time counting down on their arm, and if you "zero out," you die instantly. Their monetary system is based on seconds, minutes and hours, and if you're really rich, decades and millennia. A bus ride costs 2 hours, a cup of coffee costs two minutes of life, and if you're rich enough you can live forever.

Will Salas (Justin Timberlake) lives each day as his last, as he lives in the ghettos of Dayton. His clock rarely has more than a day, and more often has hours. Will expertly dodges the thugs in Dayton who steal hours from the poor, but while out at a bar after "pay day" at the factory, Will saves the life of a very rich man. Tired with his hundreds of years of life, the rich man gives his 100 plus years of life to Will—essentially killing himself in the process. The murder suspect? Will Salas.

What follows is action packed, but not as well thought out as it could've been. More of the social aspects of this fantastic idea were dropped or glossed over in favor of action and sex, but were by no means completely absent. I had so many questions at the end, that I wanted a follow up, or more explanation. Who are the people who started the genetic engineering? How was it initially implemented? What was the history of these people before their time modifications? What is the greater role of Timekeepers, the cops of this world (played by Cillian Murphy)? What are the laws that govern them, or don't? What are the social aspects to being perpetually young and beautiful? And why isn't this movie more violent and post-apocalyptic if you're literally fighting for seconds of your life constantly?

All in all it was an entertaining movie that tickled my curiosity and was more than a Transformers-esque series of stuff blowing up. JT even did a halfway decent job of acting like a caring, considerate young man growing up in rough economic times.

But I can't help but feel like it could've gone from something interesting, to a fantastic movie with a more effort and better writing.

I do recommend, but you could pass and you wouldn't miss too much.

I really liked this movie! Like you, I have a bunch of questions about this not-to-distant future. I don't know if you noticed, but they did leave room for a.....sequel! It would make sense to have one so our questions could be answered. You're right about JT's acting. Not too terrible, and he is sooo sexy!
